‘Homecoming’ Season 2 Review: Janelle Monae Series Loses ...

It's an interesting and unsettling re-structuring of the detective drama, and it adds to the visual and aural onslaught from Esmail and co, who are pulling the strings to engage the viewer even when the story lulls. This is a very satisfyingly structured series indeed. Not so with Amazon’s “Homecoming,” whose superlative first season was fueled both by the chemistry between Julia Roberts and Stephan James and by Sam Esmail’s direction, with its self-conscious debts to Hitchcock.

For instance, one episode contains the single most inventive use of aspect ratio I have ever seen. And Julia Roberts is excellent.

Missed at least as much as Heidi is Sam Esmail, who directed every episode last season. She’s undimmed from her glory days.Monáe’s character is an enigma: Is she a military vet, a junkie, an attorney, or maybe none of those things? Unraveling her identity is the game, so explaining anything more is a virtual minefield of spoilers.

James raises the series' energy when he arrives, but there's no inherent reason why it needed to be this character returning in this capacity.Season Two has the new story about who Jackie is and what happened to her, and it eventually circles back to Walter in the Pacific Northwest town where Heidi left him. She’s in the middle of a lake.

Amazon’s big hope for autumn sees Roberts play a psychologist caught up in a complicated government programme.

'Homecoming' Season 2 Review: Déjà Vu All Over Again ...

A slow burner yes but so satisfying, both emotionally and in terms of plot, by the time the characters come home. Here she was, late to the party, making her television debut half a decade after every other big-name star in Hollywood.Memory loss was a problem for her predecessor as the show’s main character, Julia Roberts’ social worker Heidi.

What happened to her, and whether or not she can accurately remember it, is the basis of the drama here. And even though "Jacqueline" is engaged in the investigation, the show never lets her ingenuity be a driving force. There are indications she may be a drug user.

To say more would, perhaps, give away twists and turns, but those plot movements are of more purely academic interest than emotional involvement. She has no idea how she got there.

But that could be said about most of Season Two.This is as loving a homage to Hitchcock as I’ve ever seen, and I once watched that Gus Van Sant Psycho remake.Amazon is releasing Homecoming Season Two on May 22nd.

Homecoming moves along reasonably fast and the last couple episodes, especially the finale, find some momentum that the start of the season lacks — especially if you're trying to remember where the first season ended and what the creators expect you to still care about. As entertaining as it was — and as great as Julia Roberts and Stephan James were in the lead roles — the result still felt like a bit of a disappointment; every time the show appeared poised to open up or dig deeper, it instead retreated into a mystery that initially seemed complex but ultimately dodged nuances related to PTSD and memory.

Roberts gave an excellent performance in the first season, one that ended up being almost inexplicably under-recognized.Amazon’s big hope for autumn sees Roberts play a psychologist caught up in a complicated government programme.Homecoming moves along reasonably fast and the last couple episodes, especially the finale, find some momentum that the start of the season lacks — especially if you're trying to remember where the first season ended and what the creators expect you to still care about.

Turns out television is exactly her medium.Esmail, though, was already mashing up techniques he loved from Alfred Hitchcock, Brian De Palma, and Alan J.Rather than toggling back and forth between two timelines, the season spends several consecutive episodes in one, then flashes back for several more to slowly explain how Jackie wound up in the rowboat, then snaps back to its own present.

I’ve seen all seven episodes.Esmail’s framing still claws every last ounce of potential from each setup, but now it doesn’t look as if someone banged into the camera just before it started rolling. When the title card for the finale appears and you see that it’s called “Again,” that will seem about right.

The first season of Amazon's Homecoming was a stylish pastiche of '70s conspiracy thriller elements.Yes, I realise that this is the second time this phrase has been used in the space of three paragraphs, but that’s because Homecoming courts it so mercilessly. She’s used more as a device to transport viewers through a labyrinth of covert actions and reactions.

But is Sam Esmail’s show too smart for its own good?.and they are surrounded by a fine supporting cast.'Homecoming' Review Hollywood Reporter.
